New York City has adopted an amendment to its Human Rights Law aimed at eradicating discrimination based on height or weight. The legislation applies to employers, housing providers, and operators of public accommodations in the city. In the words of Mayor Eric Adams: “It shouldn’t matter how tall you are or how much you weigh when you’re looking for a job, are out on the town, or trying to rent an apartment."

On May 11, 2021, New York City enacted the “Retirement Security for All Act” (Bill Nos. 888-A and 901-A). The law establishes a retirement savings program for private employers with five or more employees if those employers do not otherwise offer employees a retirement plan, such as a 401(K), 403(B), or defined benefit pension plan.

New York City Council Proposes Essential Workers’ Bill of Rights Posted on: May 08, 2020 In: COVID-19 Response
In April, the New York City Council introduced a sweeping legislative package designed to aid small businesses, essential workers, tenants, and the homeless in the five boroughs during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The package includes a series of bills the Council calls the “NYC Essential Workers’ Bill of Rights,” which would require large employers to provide additional protections and hazard pay to hourly workers assisting the city’s efforts to continue to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic.
