Christopher Ballod Quoted in Corporate Counsel Article on Cybersecurity and the Remote Work Trend

Philadelphia, Pa. (June 18, 2020) – Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Partner Christopher E. Ballod was recently quoted by Corporate Counsel (part of Law.com) in an article titled “With Remote Working, Legal Departments May Be Addressing Cybersecurity on Multiple Fronts.” The article discusses how corporate legal departments and their organizations will be reexamining cybersecurity measures as large volumes of employees are expected to continue to work from home, even after the COVID-19-related shutdowns have been lifted.

As the article describes, companies have begun to focus more on securing their endpoints, while also continuing to protect their existing office networks. Mr. Ballod told Corporate Counsel that while a gradual shift to remote working began before the pandemic, organizations were not necessarily prepared for large portions of their workforce to move to remote work at the same time.

Mr. Ballod also described that in addition to protecting the health of their networks, organizations must ensure that they comply with data privacy laws. He noted that corporate legal departments are focusing on the potential consequences associated with these laws, while other organizations continue to focus on business continuity. “So I’m seeing that people have sounded the alert or at least are aware that ‘Look, if our data goes out the door, we have legal obligations, potential liability and brand dilution and other risks,’” Mr. Ballod explained.

Mr. Ballod, CIPP/US, CIPP/E, is a vice chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice, and a member of its Corporate and Complex Business & Commercial Litigation Practices. He regularly counsels clients on the prevention of data breach incidents, as well as during the response and notification process after an incident occurs. He is also a frequent contributor to the firm's Digital Insights blog.
