Lawrence R. LaPorte

Partner

Lawrence (Larry) R. LaPorte is a senior partner in the Los Angeles office of Lewis Brisbois and is a member of the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, where he focuses on IP litigation, related licensing and business litigation, IP management programs, technology transfer and related corporate transactions.

Larry has represented leading companies, private investment firms, early stage concerns, real estate and architecture firms, and entrepreneurs in numerous patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright and breach-of-contract actions in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the United States, often in bet-the-company matters. He has represented companies of all sizes, ranging from aerospace and defense conglomerates, to smart phone camera and lens technology developers, to self-made technology innovators, and he has litigated complex technologies including fiber optic communications, aerospace, fintech, and numerous software innovations. Larry successfully represented British engineering and aerospace multinational Meggitt PLC in a massive trade secret theft case in federal court obtaining a favorable settlement, world-wide injunction requiring the actual return of the trade secrets, and monetary sanctions. The case involved critical aviation sensor trade secrets developed in Europe and the U.S. and misappropriated in China through a complicated theft network. Larry has an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Larry has also helped many companies to successfully monetize patent portfolios through litigation-based licensing programs. He has also represented clients in numerous U.S. and foreign Patent and Trademark Office proceedings, and has regularly advised corporations, boards, and in-house committees and counsel regarding IP governance matters and the adoption of “best practices” for the registration and enforcement of IP. He is the author of a turnkey IP management program which includes all necessary policies, procedures, and forms to identify, secure and protect all types of IP in the U.S. and all major foreign jurisdictions, and has provided clients with a corresponding curriculum to enable companies, executives, and employees involved with technology development to successfully teach and implement such plans in-house.

Before joining Lewis Brisbois, Larry started his career at an IP litigation powerhouse firm, and then continued his career at one of the largest international law firms. Larry graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota Law School, achieved legal writing honors, was a student director of the international moot court program, and has an engineering degree from the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology.
