Caroline Cao Shares Perspectives with Law360 for Article on Move to Lewis Brisbois

Sacramento, Calif. (August 9, 2022) - Sacramento and San Francisco Partner Caroline L. Cao recently shared her thoughts with Law360 regarding her practice, the importance of diversity, and her decision to join Lewis Brisbois. The Law360 article titled, “Lewis Brisbois Adds Corporate Partner In San Francisco,” explains that Ms. Cao joined Lewis Brisbois after serving as an associate general counsel, and most recently as head of legal and general counsel, for a skyscraper complex in San Francisco.

Ms. Cao told the publication that when considering a position with Lewis Brisbois, the firm’s approach to diversity appealed to her, noting, “Throughout my experience working in the real estate, construction, technology, and legal industries, I noticed that I was often the only woman in the boardroom. On several occasions, I have been mistaken for an administrative assistant or a person that was junior to the general counsel. When I was considering joining Lewis Brisbois, I was pleased to see that many women held leadership positions at the firm."

In addition, Ms. Cao shared a story that highlighted why diversity was important to her on a personal level. "I recall, vividly, being mistaken for an interpreter to a tech expat when traveling in Asia with my husband, who is Jewish and not Asian," she described. "We work hard to ensure that equality exists inside of our home and that we build diversity in our professional endeavors as well. This important value is about the future generation. We want our daughter to be in an environment with equality and without bias where she can grow and prosper."

On the topic of her practice, Ms. Cao told Law360 that she focuses on problem-solving and developing creative solutions for businesses. Emphasizing that her background as in-house counsel allows her to work effectively with her clients, she explained, "As a result, I understand that it is important not simply to interpret the law, but to be able to communicate the law to the decision-makers and to think outside of the box. Understanding situations from the business leaders' perspectives is essential. The issues they face are not always black and white. My experience allows me to serve as a strategic partner to our clients."
