Minyao Wang

Partner

Minyao Wang is a partner in the New York City office of Lewis Brisbois and a member of the Complex Business & Commercial Litigation, Bankruptcy & Insolvency, Ukraine Conflict Response, and China Practices. He has 15 years of experience at both the trial and appellate levels. Mr. Wang has achieved high-stakes victories in bench and jury trials, as well as arbitrations. His clients have included Fortune 500 companies, hedge funds, institutional investors, insurance companies, start-ups and high net-worth families in the United States. He has recovered, on behalf of his clients, billions of dollars from some of the largest banks, financial institutions, and auditing firms in the world.

Mr. Wang is noted for his expertise in complex business litigation, bankruptcy litigation, and cross-border litigation. A former law clerk to Chief Judge Carla E. Craig of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York, he has represented official committees, trustees, and offshore liquidators in complex chapter 11 cases, including those of Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Relativity Media, Newpage, and Station Casinos.

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Mr. Wang represented institutional clients in lawsuits against the major global banks regarding the sale of defective residential mortgage-backed securities. He was a lead associate on a team that recovered hundreds of millions of dollars through settlements.

Mr. Wang is also an experienced cross-border trial lawyer. He has written for and has been quoted on international legal issues by Law360 and other publications. Mr. Wang is one of the very few U.S.-raised and U.S.-educated trial lawyers who are fluent in written and spoken Chinese. As a result, he is a uniquely formidable advocate for and against Chinese entities. For example, Mr. Wang was a key member of a trial team that won a $100 million arbitral award against a major Chinese corporation. That case turned on Chinese documents and Mandarin-speaking fact witnesses. An effective cross-cultural negotiator, Mr. Wang has also represented multiple Chinese parties in reaching confidential favorable settlements with their U.S. adversaries without resorting to litigation. Mr. Wang has effectively used tools of United States litigation to protect the intellectual property rights of Chinese corporations. He has also guided Chinese companies in successfully investing in the United States and navigating the current complex geopolitical environment.

Mr. Wang participated in the American Bar Association’s Diverse Leaders Academy program. At the ABA, he co-chaired the Fiduciary Duty Subcommittee of the Business Torts and Unfair Competition Committee.

Mr. Wang previously worked for U.S. diplomatic missions in China and served as a prosecutor for an international war crimes tribunal. Mr. Wang has also briefed pro bono human rights cases in federal appellate courts for prominent NGOs.

Mr. Wang graduated with honors from Duke University and Duke University School of Law. Mr. Wang grew up in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
