Jonathan Goins

With over 18 years of experience, Mr. Goins serves as lead counsel in intellectual property and technology litigation across the country. His trial experience includes “bet the company” cases with multimillion-dollar exposure, including obtaining a jury defense verdict in Kinon Surface Designs, Inc. v. Hyatt Corporation, Case No. 9:18-CV-81065 (S.D. Fla. 2019). Mr. Goins is ranked consistently in peer-recognitions and publications for his expertise in intellectual property, including most recently, being named among the world’s leading trademark professionals for the fourth time in the annual edition of the World Trademark Review (WTR) 1000. WTR has recognized Mr. Goins as “a protean IP lawyer” who “litigates assertively, counsels deftly and negotiates deals proficiently.” Recent representative clients include HYATT Hotels, McIlhenny (Tabasco brands), NBCUniversal and Netflix.

With a “360” degree intellectual property background, Mr. Goins is a trusted business advisor in counseling clients’ IP rights from creation to enforcement for a wide variety of industries including technology, entertainment, sports, fashion apparel, consumer goods, food and beverage, and hospitality. He oversees large-scale trademark portfolio management (including global brand marketing strategy, search opinions, advertising clearance, prosecution and maintenance) for some of the world’s most famous brands. As a counselor, Mr. Goins regularly advises clients in maximizing IP assets and mitigating litigious risk regarding IP issues in multimillion-dollar corporate transactions. He has prepared agreements regarding ownership, indemnification, warranties, use and licensing of IP rights; confidential non-disclosure, non-solicitation and non-compete covenants; trade secrets’ policies; copyright “works made for hire” provisions; talent and production in music, tv and film; and promotional marketing and advertising sponsorships.

As a litigator, Mr. Goins serves as lead counsel in federal district court cases nationally involving copyright and trademark infringement, counterfeiting, false advertising, unfair competition, cybersquatting, Internet libel and gripe sites, misappropriation of trade secrets, right of publicity, business torts, fraud and breach of contract claims. He has enforced IP rights in social media disputes, and contested proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Trial & Appeal Board and the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Arbitration & Mediation/UDRP Center.

As General Counsel to the National Bar Association, Mr. Goins is also very active in diversity and inclusion-related business development and origination efforts, including co-planning the NBA’s Annual Corporate Counsel Leadership Summit since 2017 and its Annual Corporate Counsel Conference since 2015. He serves on the firm’s Executive Marketing Committee.

Mr. Goins is a frequent speaker and author on various topics regarding intellectual property, and since 2012, has lectured on copyright law, trademark law, entertainment law, and sports law as an Adjunct Professor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. He was a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Inez Smith Reid of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
