(March 10, 2023) - Los Angeles Partner Daniel C. DeCarlo, Atlanta Partner Jonathan D. Goins, and Chicago Partners Jill Anderfuren and Bryan P. Sugar have once again been included in the World Trademark Review’s (WTR) 2023 edition of the WTR 1000 - the World's Leading Trademark Professionals guide - as recommended experts in their field. This is the sixth consecutive year that Mr. DeCarlo, Mr. Goins, and Ms. Anderfuren have been ranked in the WTR 1000, and Ms. Anderfuren's ninth time overall. It is the third consecutive year that Mr. Sugar has been included.

The WTR 1000 identifies the leading professionals and firms that are outstanding at obtaining, protecting, managing, enforcing, and monetizing trademarks. The guide is developed through a qualitative research process that evaluates individuals based on their depth of expertise, market presence, and sophistication of matters they handle. This process includes peer interviews and written submissions regarding the attorneys’ work.

Mr. DeCarlo, who serves as chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, is described by the WTR guide as “a seasoned trademark expert with a track record of litigation success going back 30 years.” WTR also discusses how Mr. DeCarlo's approach "combines thorough preparation with assertive strategising, which has been key to his quick and timely resolution of his clients’ most pressing problems." The guide also mentions his current high profile case, leading the defense of What Goes Around Comes Around, against which Chanel has pursued claims of false advertising, counterfeiting and trademark infringement. Mr. DeCarlo focuses his practice on complex business litigation matters, including the Lanham Act, trademarks, false advertising, copyright, unfair competition matters, and other related intellectual property claims.

Regarding Mr. Goins, WTR notes that "he brings over 15 years’ experience to a sophisticated practice which takes in Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurs alike." The guide also mentions two of his clients in the engineering and construction industry, Arcadis and HJ Russell & Company, that Mr. Goins assisted with licensing matters and strategic counsel. Mr. Goins, who has two decades of experience in the intellectual property space, is the vice-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology and Entertainment, Media & Sports Practices. He serves a range of companies in litigation across the country, including in “bet the company” matters. He also lectures on copyright and trademark law as an adjunct professor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

In its description of Ms. Anderfuren, a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology and Antitrust & Competition Practices, WTR shared one service user's comments who recommended her “for those wading into waters unknown, exiting borders and creating a global footprint. Her creative and cost-effective approach has been a great benefit to us. She is extremely knowledgeable and comfortable providing international trademark service.” With over 20 years of international experience in the analysis, prosecution, clearance, licensing, and litigation of trademarks, Ms. Anderfuren works with clients in the insurance, consulting, medical, and consumer products industries to build and maintain successful trademark protection strategies.

As for Mr. Sugar, who is also a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, WTR noted that he is "especially strong in IP litigation, but he is equally deft with registrations and transactions." Mr. Sugar has more than 20 years of experience and has litigated intellectual property disputes on behalf of a number of the world's largest and most sophisticated brands. He regularly represents his clients before federal district, state, and appellate courts, and in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Please join us in congratulating these attorneys on their recognition.
