Jonathan Goins Authors Daily Report Article on Measuring DEI Progress

Atlanta, Ga. (January 23, 2023) - Atlanta Partner and Vice-Chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology and Entertainment, Media & Sports Practices Jonathan Goins recently authored an article for the Daily Report (part of Law.com), titled, “New Year, Same Problem: Will More DE&I Progress Be Made in 2023?” The article discusses recent diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) trends in the corporate and legal industries.

Mr. Goins begins the article by reviewing the pledges and plans that law firms and companies have made with respect to DEI in recent history, noting that 2020 “seemed to be an inflection point of positive movement for DE&I efforts . . . in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.” The author goes on to explain the importance of measuring DEI progress and posits, ”As we embark on another year, we must ask ourselves: how are we measuring change?”

Next, Mr. Goins highlights statistical data related to the apparent impact that DEI initiatives have had upon S&P 500 boards. He also discusses how companies’ requirements and incentives related to the diversity of outside legal teams has resulted in DEI progress. Mr. Goins closes the article by observing, “Access to targeted opportunities, greater intentionality and allyship from corporate management and board governance, and incentives—these are all factors in evaluating DE&I progression in 2023.”
