(May 13, 2022) - Los Angeles Partner Daniel C. DeCarlo, Atlanta Partner Jonathan D. Goins, and Chicago Partners Jill Anderfuren and Bryan P. Sugar have been included in the World Trademark Review’s (WTR) 2022 edition of the WTR 1000 - the World's Leading Trademark Professionals guide as recommended experts in their field. This is the fifth consecutive year that Mr. DeCarlo, Mr. Goins, and Ms. Anderfuren have been ranked in the WTR 1000, and Ms. Anderfuren's eighth time overall. It is the second consecutive year that Mr. Sugar has been included.

The WTR 1000 identifies the leading professionals and firms that are outstanding at obtaining, protecting, managing, enforcing, and monetizing trademarks. The guide is developed through a qualitative research process that evaluates individuals based on their depth of expertise, market presence, and sophistication of matters they handle. This process includes peer interviews and written submissions regarding the attorneys’ work.

Mr. DeCarlo, who serves as chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, is described by the WTR guide as “a tenacious litigator who takes his clients’ problems on as his own.” WTR also notes that Mr. DeCarlo is leading the defense of a high-profile trademark suit filed by Chanel. With three decades of experience in the intellectual property arena, Mr. DeCarlo focuses his practice on complex business litigation matters, including the Lanham Act, trademarks, false advertising, copyright, unfair competition matters, and other related intellectual property claims.

Similarly, WTR notes that Mr. Goins “is comfortably at ease in any role – protector, litigator, deal broker – and covers a lot of ground for clients.” The guide describes that he “assists global consultancy Arcadis with clearance, filings and transactions, putting his versatility to good use.” Mr. Goins, who has two decades of experience in the intellectual property space, is the vice-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology and Entertainment, Media & Sports Practices. He serves as lead counsel for Fortune 500, mid-size and profitable start-up companies in litigation across the country, including in “bet the company” matters. Mr. Goins also lectures on copyright and trademark law as an adjunct professor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

Moreover, WTR explains that Ms. Anderfuren, a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology and Antitrust & Competition Practices “never loses sight of the business objectives of her clients and consistently provides clear, creative, practical and timely advice. Very detail-oriented, she is able to recall and process information very quickly. She has also mastered a number of non-standard trademark topics” and has “a rare ability to successfully protect difficult-to-register marks and outstanding agreement negotiation skills.“ With over 20 years of international experience in the analysis, prosecution, clearance, licensing, and litigation of trademarks, Ms. Anderfuren works with clients in the insurance, consulting, medical, and consumer products industries to build and maintain successful trademark protection strategies.

Furthermore, Mr. Sugar, who is also a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, is described by WTR as “the go-to for federal court litigation” who “has broad horizons and a deep knowledge of IP and data privacy law, along with refined contentious, transactional and counselling skills.” Mr. Sugar has more than 20 years of experience and has litigated intellectual property disputes on behalf of a number of the world's largest and most sophisticated brands. Mr. Sugar regularly represents his clients before federal district, state, and appellate courts, and in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
