New York Partner Alecia Walters-Hinds will speak at the upcoming annual Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) Conference in Atlanta on August 12, in a session titled “Defending a Client with a Big Name or a Bad Reputation Post-COVID-19."

Atlanta, Ga. (July 19, 2021) – New York Partner Alecia Walters-Hinds will speak at the upcoming annual Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) Conference in Atlanta. In a session on August 12 at 3:25 p.m., titled “Defending a Client with a Big Name or a Bad Reputation Post-COVID-19,” Ms. Walters-Hinds will discuss strategies that attorneys and claims professionals can implement when working with clients who have bad media reputations from past wrongdoing. She will be joined by a manager of an insurance company and a government claims specialist.

In connection with her presentation, Ms. Walters-Hinds was interviewed by CLM Daily News for an article titled “Handling the Big and the Bad.” As the article describes, many companies have faced scrutiny, both fairly and unfairly, for the manner in which they have handled the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Walters-Hinds told the publication that when defending claims, many big-named companies and other organizations “have had to adjust their defense based on COVID-19 considerations.”

Ms. Walters-Hinds also discussed with CLM Daily News how plaintiffs’ attorneys have used the pandemic to seek large awards. She explained, “Plaintiff’s counsel use poor preparation on behalf of the claims professional and/or defense counsel to exploit large awards based on anger, sympathy, the reptile theory, and other factors. . . . They are now using the effects of COVID-19 to amplify these awards.” Ms. Walters-Hinds added, “I have been able to have many discussions with both plaintiff and defense attorneys to discuss what strategies have worked in either obtaining large awards or preventing them.” Read the full CLM Daily News article here.

Ms. Walters-Hinds is vice-chair of Lewis Brisbois' General Liability Practice, and the President of the New York City Chapter of the American Board Of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). She specializes in the handling of high exposure and catastrophic injuries that range from general liability to medical malpractice claims.
