New York, N.Y. (April 12, 2021) – New York Partner Shawn Choudhury was recently interviewed by the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY) for its Member Spotlight Interview series, in which he discussed his career, including how being a lawyer of South Asian descent has impacted his professional life.

During the interview, Mr. Choudhury described how his Bangladeshi parents, who immigrated to the United States, inspired him, noting, “I would not be privy to this understanding of the world without seeing their firsthand efforts to succeed and in turn guiding me.” He further explained that through SABANY, internships, and friends, he forged connections beyond his family “bubble,” which allowed him to progress in his legal career. “I encourage all young aspiring attorneys to get out there and make meaningful connections. The practice of law is a relationship business, and it is never too early to start cultivating those relationships.”

Mr. Choudhury also emphasized the importance of establishing relationships with trustworthy mentors, explaining that New York Partners Greg Katz, Alecia Walters-Hinds, Jennifer Oxman, and Adam Schwartzstein have been his “biggest advocates.” He told SABANY, “Good mentorship is crucial for the development of a young lawyer and success in any career. Mentors will provide you with the road map and this tends to be the unwritten road map to success.”

Mr. Choudhury is a member of Lewis Brisbois’ General Liability Practice. He focuses his practice on litigation involving municipal and quasi municipal entities, roadway/sidewalk defects and design, premises liability, commercial motor vehicle, and dram shop issues. He also served as vice-president of sponsorship for SABANY and as chair of the organization’s Litigation Committee.
