Mary Smigielski to Discuss the Use of Biometric Data for Lockton Webinar

Chicago, Ill. (October 6, 2020) – Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) Practice co-chair Mary A. Smigielski will join a webinar panel titled “Biometric Data: Privacy, Cybersecurity & Insurance Considerations,” held in conjunction with Lockton Companies, Inc., on October 15 at 1:00 p.m. CT.

Ms. Smigielski, along with experts from Lockton and the U.S. Secret Service, will discuss how organizations can properly utilize biometric data, as well as offer advice on how to continually evaluate privacy protection programs and compliance obligations given a growing landscape of laws. Ms. Smigielski recently co-authored a white paper with Lockton that discusses the privacy and cybersecurity challenges that businesses face when gathering, using, and storing biometric data, and which serves as the basis of the discussion for this webinar.

Ms. Smigielski co-founded and serves as the co-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Illinois BIPA Practice, the first in the nation. She has been on the cutting edge of BIPA litigation, providing commentary to a number of outlets on the topic, and recently co-authored an Insight article for Bloomberg Law on the potential nationwide implications of BIPA during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Smigielski is also a member of the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice.
