Abby Swanson-Garney is an associate in the Portland office of Lewis Brisbois and a member of the Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. She holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) credential and the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) credential. She assists clients in responding to data security incidents, including advising clients in their response efforts, coordinating digital forensics and remediation, advising on data breach notification statutes, facilitating the fulfillment of consumer and regulatory notification obligations, and responding to government, regulatory, and media inquiries. Abby also advises clients on compliance with foreign, federal, and state privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act, helping clients to proactively manage risk.
Abby volunteered for the Minnesota Volunteer Lawyers Network Legal Access Point Clinic and the LegalCORPS Brief Legal Advice Clinic for entrepreneurs, providing pro-bono legal services to clients in Minnesota.
While in law school at the University of Minnesota, Abby served as a research assistant regarding developments in domestic and international privacy law and drafted updates to Privacy and Data Protection Law, Second Edition, by William McGeveran. She also served as a privacy and security law clerk for a national technology retailer, where she advised on legal matters relating to “Internet of Things” devices, artificial intelligence, and other privacy law related issues. Abby also served as a student director for the Child Advocacy and Juvenile Justice Clinic and volunteered with the Asylum Law Project, the Native American Services Project, and the Minnesota Justice Foundation’s Street Law program.
