Miami, Fla. (September 18, 2019) – San Francisco Partner Gordon J. Calhoun and Los Angeles Partner John Breen have co-authored an article reviewing the main points and key reflections from the 2019 Lighthouse Illuminations Summit held earlier this year in Miami, Florida. The summit brought together eDiscovery, compliance, and information governance professionals from around the world to discuss industry hot topics and best practices. The article, “Reflections on Illuminations,” was featured on the summit’s related blog site.

In the article, Messrs. Calhoun and Breen provide a concise summary of six topics covered in detail, beginning with new workplace communication formats and ephemeral communications, such as WhatsApp and WeChat. They then discuss the potential cost-savings and efficiencies of data re-use; Office365 in the world of eDiscovery; cryptocurrencies and blockchain; and finally, the “Indispensable eDiscovery Counsel.”

The article notes that “Thirteen years after the Federal Rules were first amended to address the revolution in evidence caused by the digital information age, it is evident most attorneys do not have the inclination or expertise to master the … advanced math that drives the algorithms that make management of hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of data possible,” therefore “practitioners will need to develop affiliations with attorneys who speak ‘Geek’ and embrace the concept that reasonableness, not perfection, is required.”

Mr. Calhoun serves as chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Electronic Discovery, Information Management & Compliance Practice, and manages the insurance regulatory and reinsurance division of the firm’s Insurance Coverage & Bad Faith Practice.

Mr. Breen is a member of the firm’s Insurance Regulatory & Compliance and Reinsurance Practices, and is a frequent speaker on eDiscovery topics and trends.
