Jay Kramer Quoted in Legaltech News Article about Encryption Backdoors

New York, NY (October 30, 2018) - New York Partner Jay Kramer was recently quoted in an article from Legaltech news, part of Law.com, on encryption backdoors.

The article discussed the recent move by Five Eyes, a group consisting of the governments of the U.S. Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, to ask tech industry giants to install back doors in their encryption, making it easier to get a hold of encrypted communications of suspected bad actors.

Mr. Kramer, a member of our Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice and former FBI special counsel who helped found the agency’s Cyber Law Unit, discussed the potential negative consequences of this, and the likely need for more human investigative techniques to combat criminals exploiting these backdoors.

“The focus on, let’s say, human source development is going to take on greater importance, to have someone from inside the criminal organization tell you what is going on because they are motivated to do that, whatever those motivations might be,” Mr. Kramer said.
