David Russo Publishes Article on Legal Risks of Autonomous Shipping
San Francisco, Calif. (November 7, 2019) – San Francisco Partner David E. Russo recently penned an article published by the Italy-based web magazine, PortNews, examining some of the unanswered legal questions regarding the use of autonomous ships in global trade. The article, “Autonomous Ships Carrying Uncertainties,” looks at the increasing use of connected smart technology in shipping and legal blind spots that have cropped up in its wake.
Mr. Russo discusses the importance of properly defining roles and responsibilities in this new environment, especially as it pertains to on-ship personnel, shore side management, and emergency services such as the Coast Guard. He also raises concerns related to cybersecurity, protocol standardization, and maritime liability law, while offering resources for potential guidelines on how to address these issues.
Mr. Russo is a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Marine & Energy Practice. He focuses on civil and appellate litigation involving admiralty law, cargo claims, products liability, maritime personal injury defense, and commercial law. This article is based on a recent presentation Mr. Russo delivered at the BiLog Logistics & Maritime Forum in La Spezia, Italy.
