Christopher Ballod Quoted by Legaltech News on Possible Government, Social Media Cooperation

Philadelphia, Penn. (September 13, 2019) – Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Partner Christopher E. Ballod was recently quoted by Legaltech news (part of Law.com) for its article “#SafeNews? Potential Government, Social Media Partnership on Election Security is Uncharted Terrain,” which discussed the reported meetings between the federal government and several tech companies ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.

The article quoted several attorneys in the cybersecurity space on the issues raised by such a partnership, including the implications for campaign finance, free speech, and privacy laws. Mr. Ballod raised the possibility of a backlash against the tech companies if they attempted to regulate so-called fake news.

“If a lot of the media coverage they select… skews to one side of the [political] spectrum, are they going to be accused of favoritism? And then when they are on the outs politically, have they jeopardized their own existence?” asked Mr. Ballod.

Mr. Ballod is a partner in Lewis Brisbois’ Philadelphia and Pittsburgh offices. He is a regular contributor to Lewis Brisbois’ Digital Insights blog and he recently spoke with Legaltech news on another social media-related matter.
