Bert Hummel Quoted in Daily Report Article on Lawyers’ Mental Health
Atlanta, Ga. (April 2, 2021) - Atlanta Partner Bert Hummel was recently quoted in a Daily Report (part of Law.com) article titled, “'I Was Hurting Myself and My Body': More Lawyers Are Reaching Out for Help,” which discusses the trend in lawyers seeking mental health assistance during the pandemic.
As the article describes, the State Bar of Georgia’s Lawyer Assistance Program operates the “Use Your 6” program, a campaign that provides bar members with six free, confidential counseling sessions per calendar year. According to data released by the State Bar of Georgia, the number of calls to the campaign’s hotline increased by almost 10% over the last year.
Mr. Hummel, who serves as President of the State Bar of Georgia’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD), told the Daily Report that he had called the hotline. “Knowing that the program was there, I took it upon myself to call and just see how it was,” he said. Mr. Hummel explained that the hotline operators take into consideration a caller’s geographic location as well as therapist preferences such as gender and ethnicity. He described, “They have a list of folks that accept this Core Care type coverage and they find them in your own community,” adding, “They really customize it, as well, to find the best person to make the person who’s using their six [sessions] most comfortable.”
Although Mr. Hummel acknowledged that he felt a bit uncomfortable when answering certain initial screening questions, he advised attorneys to be open and honest when calling the hotline. “Once I realized this person’s trying to actually help identify who would be best to talk to me, that vulnerability just dissipated,” he said.
Mr. Hummel is a member of Lewis Brisbois’ General Liability and Workers' Compensation Practices. He has extensive experience in litigation and has handled hundreds of claims in his practice for a variety of insurance companies, Fortune 500 companies, large corporations, small businesses, and self-insurers, as well as TPA's, PEO's, and staffing companies. He has been a member of the YLD of the State Bar of Georgia since 2012.
