On the heels of other jurisdictions that have enacted similar legislation over the past few years, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed the CROWN Act into law on July 26, 2022, making Massachusetts the 18th state to enact such protections. The Massachusetts CROWN Act went into effect on October 24, 2022.

Massachusetts Minimum Wage: Things Are Looking Up Posted on: August 31, 2021 In: Labor & Employment
On January 1, 2021, Massachusetts increased its minimum wage to $13.50 per hour (from $12.75 per hour). The Bay State will continue to raise this wage annually in steps ($0.75 per year) to reach a minimum wage of $15.00 per hour in January 2023. Of note, there are numerous circumstances in which different wages may be paid.

Can an Employer Be Assessed Damages for the Loss of One’s Life’s Work? Posted on: June 21, 2021 In: Labor & Employment
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently faced the question of whether an employer can be assessed damages for the loss of an employee’s life’s work. The court answered this question in the affirmative, upholding the trial award of an experienced cancer researcher, who received $10.2 million in damages against her former employer, Steward Health. The award represented the cost of reestablishing her research laboratory, lost as a result of the defendant’s unlawful breach of her employment contract.

Massachusetts Amends Data Breach Law Notice Requirements, Mandates Credit Monitoring Services Posted on: January 24, 2019 In: Data Privacy & Cybersecurity
Massachusetts recently updated its breach notification statute, requiring an organization to provide additional services for individuals and greater disclosures to state regulators when a data breach occurs. The changes go into effect on April 10, 2019
