Gene R. Smith


Gene Smith is a partner in the New Orleans office of Lewis Brisbois and a member of the General Liability Practice. Gene served nine years as in-house counsel for a New Orleans based real estate development firm overseeing commercial projects in New Orleans and throughout Southeast Louisiana. He advised on development potential and acquisition requirements of multiple sites for commercial development, including working with local zoning officials to identify and complete applications for variances or modifications to the existing zoning as necessary, including properties located in historic districts.

Gene regularly liaised with commercial banking professionals to complete all required documentation for funding of commercial development sites as well as negotiations with general contractors, preparing and reviewing construction contracts. He also was also responsible for drafting and approving commercial leases with prospective tenants, including a variety of national and local commercial enterprises, general office, medical related entities, mixed use developments, as well as state and federal agency tenants.

Gene also successfully prepared and oversaw historic tax credit applications from initial filing through Louisiana Department of Revenue audit and approval by the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation and the United States Department of the Interior.

Prior to concentrating in real estate and land use matters, Gene served in a senior management role as the Chief Deputy Clerk of Court in the United States District Courts for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Louisiana. Before his tenure with the United States Courts, Gene was in private practice representing vessel owners and other admiralty clients, defending person injury and death claims, collision, allision, towage and property damage cases.
