The Admiralty, Maritime & Energy Litigation Practice handles a broad array of matters from our offices located throughout the nation. Our clients include a broad array of businesses involved in the maritime and energy industry, as well as marine insurers. This practice places a particular emphasis on the marine and oil & gas industries, from wellhead to gas pump, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, as well as marine and energy litigation and transactional matters across the United States. This group has particularly extensive experience in litigation and business matters related to hydrocarbon refining and petrochemical manufacturing, as well as distribution and marketing. Our attorneys have extensive trial experience in maritime and energy matters, and are adept at all forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Casualty Claims

We represent clients involved in upstream exploration and production, as well as those involved in downstream refining, distribution and marketing. We have experience in the defense of catastrophic personal injury and death and property damage claims arising from incidents aboard ships, barges, vessels, onshore and offshore rigs and platforms of all kinds, as well as claims arising out of refineries, marine terminals, pipelines, service stations and construction sites.

Our attorneys have handled virtually every type of personal injury defense and property damage claim that invokes the application of maritime law. We regularly defend our clients and their insurers against personal injury and death claims brought by seamen under the Jones Act, the General Maritime Law and DOHSA. We defend third party claims brought by longshoremen/ship repair workers under the LSHWCA and workers on the Outer Continental Shelf under the OCSLA. We also handle injury and property claims arising out of the operation of marine terminals and equipment, as well as claims involving yachts and smaller watercraft craft. This group handles a significant volume of maritime products liability litigation for our clients both foreign and domestic.

We routinely try maritime claims in the federal and state courts and have years of experience defending claims arising out of allisions, collisions, pollution, salvage, property and hull damage. Our attorneys have experience in complex maritime litigation including limitation of liability proceedings, in rem, and maritime attachment actions, vessel arrests, ship mortgage foreclosures, general average, and other issues involving maritime liens including bankruptcy, in which case we can employ the resources of our Bankruptcy & Insolvency, Surety and Fidelity Practices.


The attorneys in our Admiralty, Maritime & Energy Litigation Practice provide our clients with transactional experience. We negotiate and draft master service agreements, ocean transportation contracts including charter parties, bills of lading, terminal leases, and we litigate disputes arising from these agreements when necessary.

Cargo/Multimodal Litigation

We litigate cargo damage and loss claims arising from ocean, ground, rail and air transportation contracts under the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, the Carmack Amendment, Warsaw Convention, bills of lading and other contracts of affreightment.

Ocean & Inland Marine Insurance

We have extensive experience in advising and defending insurance clients on coverage and bad faith claims for ocean and inland marine risks, such as P&I, hull & machinery, yacht, pollution, motor truck cargo, and other policies that insure owners, carriers, charterers, ship builders and repairers, wharfingers, terminals, bailees and warehousers, freight forwarders and other third-party logistics providers and cargo intermediaries.

Government Contracts & Regulatory Compliance

Our experienced attorneys routinely represent maritime interests involved in government contract disputes that arise during the solicitation, bid, award, performance and post performance stage of the contract. We counsel clients regarding compliance with the myriad regulations governing the transportation industry promulgated by various government agencies such as the Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation including the Maritime Administration and can utilize the knowledge and contacts of the attorneys in our Government Relations Practice. We have unsurpassed knowledge in matters related to the transportation and distribution of food aid cargo around the world and our clients include ocean carriers, private voluntary organizations (PVO's) and National Governments.

Longshore & Workers' Compensation Act

We represent employers and insurance carriers in matters brought pursuant to the LSHWCA, OCSLA, including concurrent jurisdiction and asbestos and claims. We also have experience with medicare reimbursement and set aside issues, and work closely with our Workers' Compensation Practice on matters of concurrent jurisdiction.

Toxic Torts Class Action & Appeals

Our group has a great deal experience in handling mass tort, toxic tort and class actions arising out of maritime in energy activities. We handle appeals related to the admiralty and energy fields of law at every level of state and federal appellate courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Access to our Appellate Practice gives us unparalleled experience in handling these matters.
